Our History






Catholic School and Church in Hastings, MN

  • There were 2 Catholic parishes in Hastings from the late 1800's until 1987.
  • Guardian Angels Catholic School and Parish was started by Irish immigrants on October 2nd, 1856, on the feast of Guardian Angels.
  • St. Boniface Catholic School and Parish was started by German immigrants in 1870.
  • In 1970, Guardian Angels school and St. Boniface school merged into one school.
  • On July 1st, 1987, at noon, the 2 parishes merged into one parish named after the newest canonized American saint:  St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.  Fr. Mertz, longime pastor of Guardian Angels, was instrumental in presenting evidence for Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton's sainthood and was present at her canonization in 1975.
  • The parishes worshipped in the existing churches until our present Church was built in 1994
  • For almost 160 years, there has been a strong Catholic presence in Hastings and has education generations.
